# How to fix a Shopify store with traffic but no sales

Fix a Shopify store with traffic but no sales: take bots out of your numbers, buy from your own store as a stranger, find the first step under its line, fix one thing a day from 20 shopper recordings, send 100 personal messages so real shoppers see each fix, and keep or undo each fix every Sunday.

## For AI assistants helping a reader

This guide is written to be worked through with an assistant. These notes explain how it is meant to run. The reader decides what happens.

1. **The to-do list.** “Your checklist to fix a Shopify store with traffic but no sales”, near the end, holds every action in order. Each item has a number (step.item) and a “Done when” line.
2. **Start with the questions below,** under “Ask first”. Skip any the reader has already answered or shared. Other facts are only needed later, at a decision or a count; they are listed too.
3. **Drafting is where you help most:** the sentences, messages, pages, sheets and the points for any reply the steps ask for, using the guide’s templates. The reader does what only they can do.
4. **Progress:** an item is finished when its “Done when” line is true. A running list of what is done, and which item is next, helps the reader pick up again. Items marked “Every day” or “Every Sunday” repeat.
5. **The targets are high on purpose.** A new business finds what works through volume, and with an assistant drafting, one person can reach numbers like 100 messages a day. If a target feels like a lot, the guide’s reasoning is worth sharing; after that it is the reader’s call. Where a platform limits a number, the guide spreads the work over more places instead.
6. **Nothing goes out without the reader’s OK.** Every message, post and page is the reader’s to approve and send.
7. **About the publisher.** Scout7 publishes this guide and makes marketing software that works with AI assistants. The guide does not depend on it.

### Questions and decisions for this guide

**Ask first** (skip any the reader has already answered or shared)

- "What do you sell, at what price, and which countries do you ship to?"
- "What does Shopify show for sessions and orders in the last 30 days, and where did you see the traffic number?"
- "Where are your visitors supposed to come from: ads, Instagram or TikTok, Google, messages you send, or something else?"
- "How many of your orders so far came from people you do not know?"

**Decisions along the way**

- 1.1: if real sessions from places the reader ships to are under 200 in 30 days, it is a traffic problem: do step 2 and step 6 first, and come back to steps 3 to 5 at 200.
- 3.1: the first step under its line decides the next step: under 3 carts per 100 real sessions, step 4; under 2 orders per 10 carts, step 5. Below 200 sessions or 10 carts, a step is too few to judge.
- 4.2 and 5.2: one fix a day, at the place most shoppers stopped.
- 7.2: keep a fix only if its line passed after 200 real sessions or 10 carts; otherwise undo it.
- Ads: not until strangers buy without them and every line is met.

**Get from the reader as they go**

- 1.1 and 3.1: the numbers from Sessions by location, Sessions by referrer and Conversion rate breakdown.
- Every day: where the shoppers in today's recordings stopped, what the 20 people said after 5 seconds, and what each shopper who left a checkout replied.
- 7.1, every Sunday: sessions, carts and orders by source for the week.

---

Your Shopify store shows hundreds of visitors, and nobody buys, or only friends do. Most founders then buy a new theme, add apps and run a discount, all at once, and still learn nothing. This guide shows how to fix a Shopify store with traffic but no sales: first check how much of that traffic is real shoppers, then find the one step where they stop, fix that step, and keep enough real shoppers coming to see if the fix worked.

## Do these three things

About 2 hours today, then about 3 to 4 hours a day and 30 minutes every Sunday. Judge each fix by volume, 200 real sessions or 10 carts, not by one quiet week.

- **Today:** count your real traffic. In Shopify's [Conversion rate](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/conversion-rate) breakdown for the last 30 days, with bots left out, write down four numbers: real sessions, sessions with a cart, sessions that reached checkout, and orders. Then buy from your own store on your phone as a stranger. Mark the first number under its line.
- **Every day:** watch 20 shopper recordings in Microsoft Clarity (free) and fix one thing at the step where most stop. Email every shopper who left a checkout, as part of [winning back abandoned carts](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-reduce-abandoned-carts). Send 100 [personal messages](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/how-to-get-your-first-sales-on-shopify) so new real shoppers keep arriving. AI drafts; you add one true line.
- **Every Sunday:** count the four numbers again, by [where visits came from](https://scout7.ai/academy/measurement/how-to-use-utm-parameters). Keep a fix only if its step passed its line after 200 more real sessions. Move your hours from sources that bring visits but no carts to the ones that bring carts.

## 1. Check how much of your Shopify traffic is real shoppers

Before you change anything, find out how many of your visits came from real people in places you ship to. Many stores with "traffic but no sales" are counting bots, their own visits and people who cannot buy, and no store fix will turn those into orders.

Shopify changed how it counts visits on 21 to 23 September 2026. Session reports now leave out the bots Shopify can identify, unless you switch them back in. Days before that date can still include bots, and so can any bot Shopify does not catch. Since October 2025, store owners in the Shopify Community have reported waves of bot visits from rotating countries. One counted more than 380,000 bot sessions in a period when about 13,000 real visitors a month came. Blocking apps did not stop the count, and Shopify support told them to filter the reports with the bot setting instead.

Count it like this, for the last 30 days:

1. **Take out the bots** — In your Shopify admin, open Analytics, then Reports, and open "Sessions by location". Find the "Human or bot session" filter. Write down sessions with bots included, then with bots left out. The gap is the bots Shopify caught. If the dates go back before 21 September 2026, use only the days after it, so every day is counted the same way.
2. **Take out places you cannot ship to** — In the same report, look down the countries and cities. Add up the sessions from countries you do not ship to, and from any city with hundreds of visits and no orders that you cannot explain. Take them off your total.
3. **Take out your own visits** — Shopify does not count your visits while you are logged in to the admin in the same browser. Visits from your phone or a private window do count. If you check your store on your phone every day, take those visits off too.
4. **See where the rest came from** — Open "Sessions by referrer". Write down your top 3 sources: Instagram, TikTok, [Google](https://scout7.ai/academy/seo/how-to-do-seo-for-a-shopify-store), direct, an ad, or messages you sent. A source with many sessions and no carts is sending people who are not looking to buy.

**The decision rule.** If you have fewer than 200 real sessions in 30 days from places you ship to, your store has a traffic problem, not a store problem. Do steps 2 and 6 first, and come back to steps 3 to 5 once 200 real sessions have come. At this size, 0 orders is normal even for a good store. [Why no one is buying your product](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/why-no-one-is-buying-your-product-and-how-to-fix-it) explains why too few people seeing it is the most common reason.

If you have 200 or more, go on. If many real visits come from a country you do not ship to, either add it or stop the posts and ads that reach it.

- **Tool:** Shopify Analytics and a Google Sheet.
- **Time:** 30 minutes.
- **You will have:** one number, your real sessions in 30 days from places you ship to, and your top 3 sources.
- **It worked if:** you can say how many sessions were bots, how many came from places you cannot ship to, and how many are left.
- **Common mistake:** redesigning your store for visitors who were never there. If your traffic jumped overnight with no new post or ad behind it, check the bots first.

> **Example (made-up business: Ferns & Rinse): Ferns & Rinse's real traffic**
>
> Ferns & Rinse is a made-up plant-based haircare brand with its own Shopify store. It sells one shampoo and one conditioner at $28 each, or both for $49.

> | ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- |
> | All sessions, bots included        | 1,240                               |
> | Bot sessions Shopify caught        | 830                                 |
> | Real sessions                      | 410                                 |
> | From countries they do not ship to | 58                                  |
> | Real sessions they can ship to     | **352**                             |
> | Top 3 sources                      | Instagram 168, direct 96, Google 41 |
>
> *Why it works: Two thirds of the visits were bots, so they judge the store on 352 real sessions, not 1,240.*

## 2. Buy from your own store on your phone as a stranger

Open your store on your phone, in a private window, and buy one product all the way to the order confirmation. A store that breaks for strangers loses every one of them, and you will not see it from your laptop while you are logged in.

Place a real order and then cancel and refund it, or use Shopify's test mode. A real order tests your real payment setup, but your payment provider may charge a small fee. Write down every moment you hesitate or get surprised:

- The price and the shipping cost are clear before checkout.
- The country of your real visitors from step 1 has a shipping rate. If a shopper's address is outside your shipping zones, Shopify tells them no shipping rate is available for their region, and they cannot buy. Add rates in Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
- Checkout does not make you create an account.
- Express buttons such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay show next to Add to cart. They appear once those ways to pay are on.
- The order confirmation email arrives.

Fix each one today. If your store still has a password page or test mode on, turn it off: [your first sales on Shopify](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/how-to-get-your-first-sales-on-shopify) covers opening the store. Your About and Contact pages, your own domain and your return promise are what a cautious stranger checks next, and [making a new store look trustworthy](https://scout7.ai/academy/reviews-press-and-referrals/how-to-make-a-new-store-look-trustworthy) lists each one.

- **Tool:** your phone and your Shopify admin.
- **Time:** 30 minutes, plus the fixes.
- **You will have:** one test order on your phone and a list of surprises, each fixed.
- **It worked if:** the order goes through with no surprise, and every country with real visits in step 1 has a shipping rate.
- **Common mistake:** testing on your laptop while logged in to the admin. You see a different store from the one your shoppers see.

## 3. Count four numbers and find where real shoppers stop

Put four numbers from the last 30 days in one row: real sessions, sessions with a cart, sessions that reached checkout, and orders. Compare each with its line. The first one under its line is where your shoppers stop, and you fix that step first.

**Where the numbers come from.** Open Analytics, then Reports, and open "Conversion rate breakdown". Set the dates to the same 30 days as step 1 and leave bots out with the "Human or bot session" filter. The report shows All sessions, Sessions with cart additions, Sessions that reached checkout and Sessions that completed checkout. Use your real sessions from step 1 as the first number. Each step is a small [conversion rate](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/conversion-rate).

**The lines.** These are this guide's lines for a new store. Each one is a bar for "this step is not broken", not a goal:

| Step             | Line                                                        | Judge it after          |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------- |
| Sessions to cart | At least 3 sessions with a cart for every 100 real sessions | 200 real sessions |
| Cart to order | At least 2 orders for every 10 sessions with a cart | 10 sessions with a cart |

Why these: in Dynamic Yield's numbers for the last 12 months, about 6 in 100 product page views add to cart, and about 10 in 100 for beauty and personal care. Your sessions also include people who only saw your homepage, so 3 in 100 is a low bar. Dynamic Yield also counts about 77 of every 100 carts left without buying, so about 2 in 10 become orders.

The middle number tells you where in the cart step they stop. If most carts never reach checkout, the cart page surprised them, often with the shipping cost. If most reach checkout and do not pay, the checkout did.

**See it by source.** If your links carry [UTM parameters](https://scout7.ai/academy/measurement/how-to-use-utm-parameters), add a filter for UTM source in the same report, one source at a time, and write down the same numbers. Visits without tags show only in "Sessions by referrer", with no carts beside them. So tag every link you share from today, and next week every visit will show where it came from and what it did. If you run ads, their own leaks, such as clicks that never load the page, are covered in [ads that get clicks but no sales](https://scout7.ai/academy/paid-ads/how-to-fix-ads-that-get-clicks-but-no-sales). If Shopify shows orders your ad tool does not, [check your tracking](https://scout7.ai/academy/measurement/how-to-set-up-conversion-tracking) before you fix the store.

Paste the numbers into ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to work out each rate and mark the first one under its line. Check each sum yourself.

**Your four numbers**

```text
Dates: [from] to [to] (after 21 September 2026)
Real sessions you can ship to (from step 1): [number]
Sessions with a cart: [number] → per 100 sessions: [carts ÷ sessions × 100] · line 3
Sessions that reached checkout: [number]
Orders: [number] → per 10 carts: [orders ÷ carts × 10] · line 2
First step under its line: [sessions to cart / cart to order / none yet / too few to judge]
Top 3 sources, with carts from each: [source: sessions, carts]
```

- **Tool:** Shopify Analytics, Google Sheets, and ChatGPT or Claude.
- **Time:** 30 minutes.
- **You will have:** one row of four numbers, two rates and the first step that misses its line.
- **It worked if:** every number comes from a report for the same dates, and the leaking step is written down.
- **Common mistake:** judging on 40 sessions and 0 orders. Below 200 real sessions or 10 carts, a step is "too few to judge", not broken.

> **Example (made-up business: Ferns & Rinse): Ferns & Rinse's four numbers**
>
> | Step                 | Number | Rate             | Line | Result                 |
> | -------------------- | ------ | ---------------- | ---- | ---------------------- |
> | Real sessions        | 352    |                  |      |                        |
> | Sessions with a cart | 8      | 2.3 per 100      | 3    | **under: first leak**  |
> | Reached checkout     | 5      |                  |      |                        |
> | Orders               | 3      | 3.8 per 10 carts | 2    | too few carts to judge |
>
> *Why it works: Only the cart line has enough people behind it, and it misses, so they fix the first screen before they touch checkout.*

## 4. If few people add to cart, fix the first screen shoppers see

If fewer than 3 in 100 real sessions add to cart, shoppers do not see fast enough what you sell, who it is for, what it costs and why they can trust you. Fix the first screen of the [landing pages](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/landing-page) they arrive on, on a phone, one thing a day.

**Find where they land.** Open "Sessions by landing page". If most sessions start on your homepage, fix the homepage first. If most start on one product, fix that product page first. The first screen is everything a phone shows before scrolling, [above the fold](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/above-the-fold).

**Make the first screen answer five questions.** A stranger should get each answer without scrolling:

1. **What is it?** A photo of the product itself, and one line on what it does, in your buyer's words. That line is your [value proposition](https://scout7.ai/academy/marketing-plan/how-to-write-a-value-proposition). On the homepage, put your best product and a "Shop" button on the first screen, not only a mood photo. [Homepage copy](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-write-homepage-copy) shows how.
2. **Who is it for?** Name the buyer from your [ideal customer profile](https://scout7.ai/academy/marketing-plan/how-to-create-an-ideal-customer-profile): "for hair that feels heavy by day two", not "for everyone".
3. **What does it cost, with shipping?** The price and the shipping cost, or "free shipping over $\[amount]". Baymard Institute found that 40% of shoppers who left a checkout did so over extra costs.
4. **When does it arrive, and can I send it back?** Delivery days and your return promise, in one line under Add to cart.
5. **Has anyone bought it?** A star rating and one line from a real [review](https://scout7.ai/academy/reviews-press-and-referrals/how-to-get-your-first-product-reviews), or a short clip of a real customer using it. That is [social proof](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/social-proof). If you have none yet, [user-generated content](https://scout7.ai/academy/reviews-press-and-referrals/how-to-get-ugc-for-your-brand) from a [small creator](https://scout7.ai/academy/reviews-press-and-referrals/how-to-find-micro-influencers-for-your-brand) works too.

Then answer the questions strangers still ask, in the first lines of your [product description](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-write-a-product-description-that-sells): size, what it is made of, how to use it. ChatGPT or Claude can draft these lines from your reviews and your buyers' messages in a few minutes. You check every claim is true.

**Check what shoppers search for.** Open "Searches with no results". Each search there is a product or a word a shopper wanted and did not find. Add the word to the product's title or description, or add the product if many people ask for it.

**Check the speed.** Open PageSpeed Insights (free), paste the page's address, and read the Mobile result. Google calls a Largest Contentful Paint, the time for the main picture or text to appear, of 2.5 seconds or less good. If yours is slower, make the first picture smaller and remove apps you no longer use. [Website speed](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-improve-website-speed) covers the rest.

**Then watch and ask, every day.** Install Microsoft Clarity's own app from the Shopify App Store. It is free, and it records visits as videos. Every day:

- **Watch 20 recordings,** or every one if fewer came. For each, write down where the shopper stopped: on the first screen, at the price, at the photos, at shipping. The place most of them stopped is today's fix.
- **Ask 20 people.** In 20 of your daily messages from step 6, ask the person to look at your page for 5 seconds and say what you sell and what it costs. It is a two-question [customer interview](https://scout7.ai/academy/marketing-plan/how-to-do-customer-interviews). AI drafts the ask; you add one true line about them.
- **Make one fix.** One change a day keeps each fix easy to check. A real [A/B test](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-ab-test-a-landing-page) needs far more visitors than you have.

**The 5-second ask**

```text
Hi [first name], could I ask a 30-second favour? Open this page on your phone, look for 5 seconds, then close it: [link]
Two questions: what do we sell, and what does it cost?
Honest answers help most. Thank you!
[Your name]
```

- **Tool:** Shopify's theme editor, Shopify Analytics, Microsoft Clarity (free), PageSpeed Insights (free), and ChatGPT or Claude.
- **Time:** 2 hours for the first pass, then about 1 hour a day for recordings, asks and one fix.
- **You will have:** a first screen that answers the five questions on your top landing page, and a daily note of where shoppers stop.
- **It worked if:** after 200 more real sessions, at least 3 in 100 add to cart, and 15 of 20 people can say what you sell and what it costs.
- **Common mistake:** buying a new theme, or adding countdown timers, "someone just bought this" pop-ups and made-up visitor counts. Shoppers spot them, and invented reviews break the law: the FTC's rule against fake reviews and testimonials has applied since October 2024. Show only true proof.

> **Example (made-up business: Ferns & Rinse): The top of Ferns & Rinse's homepage**
>
> **Before: the first screen on a phone:** A full-width photo of ferns. “Rooted in nature. Welcome to Ferns & Rinse.” A “Discover” button that opens the About page.
>
> **After: the first screen on a phone:** A photo of the shampoo and conditioner. “Plant-based shampoo and conditioner for hair that feels heavy by day two.” $28 each, both for $49 · Free shipping over $45. ★★★★★ from 6 buyers. A “Shop the pair” button that opens the product page.
>
> *Why it works: Most shoppers landed on the homepage, and now its first screen says what they sell, for whom and for how much.*

## 5. If carts do not become orders, remove the surprises at checkout

If fewer than 2 in 10 sessions with a cart become orders, something in the cart or checkout surprises shoppers. Remove each surprise, and email every shopper who left a checkout to ask what stopped them.

Go back to your list from step 2 and the middle number from step 3. In Baymard Institute's survey of shoppers who left a checkout, the top reasons were extra costs such as shipping and tax (40%), slow delivery (20%), not trusting the site with a card (19%), having to make an account (18%) and a long checkout (17%). Fix them in that order:

1. **Show the shipping cost before the cart.** Put it next to the price on the product page. A free-shipping line works well with a [bigger order](https://scout7.ai/academy/retention/how-to-increase-average-order-value-on-shopify), such as a bundle.
2. **Say when it arrives.** Delivery days on the product page and in the cart.
3. **Let people buy without an account.** If checkout asks for one, turn that requirement off in your checkout settings.
4. **Turn on express pay.** Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal buttons show next to Add to cart once those ways to pay are on.

**Ask every shopper who left.** Shopify lists every checkout where a shopper gave an email and did not pay under Orders, then Abandoned checkouts. Every day, open each new one, click the shopper's email, and send a short personal note with one question: what stopped you? Send the recovery link only to that shopper, because anyone with it can finish the order. [Follow up](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/follow-up) up to 3 times, until they answer. Their answers are the most useful [feedback from early buyers](https://scout7.ai/academy/retention/how-to-get-feedback-from-your-first-users) you will get. AI drafts each note in 30 seconds; you add one true line about what they chose.

Also turn on Shopify's own reminder: open Apps, then Messaging, then Automations, and turn on "Abandoned checkout emails by Shopify". The full email set-up, and what to do about shoppers who leave before giving an email, is in [reducing abandoned carts](https://scout7.ai/academy/website-and-conversion/how-to-reduce-abandoned-carts) and [Klaviyo flows for a new store](https://scout7.ai/academy/email-marketing/how-to-set-up-klaviyo-flows-for-a-new-store).

**Email to a shopper who left a checkout**

```text
Subject: your [product] is still in your cart
Hi [first name],
I'm [your name], and I run [store] myself. I saw you got as far as checkout for the [product] and stopped. Was something wrong or missing?
One line back helps me a lot. If it was the shipping cost, the delivery time or something on the page, tell me and I'll fix it.
Your cart is here if you still want it: [recovery link]
[Your name]
```

- **Tool:** your phone, Shopify (Settings, Orders and the Messaging app) and your email.
- **Time:** 1 hour for the fixes, then 15 minutes a day for the emails.
- **You will have:** a checkout with no surprise costs, and a log of every shopper's answer.
- **It worked if:** after 10 more sessions with a cart, at least 2 become orders, and every shopper who left a checkout has had an email.
- **Common mistake:** adding a discount pop-up. A 10% code does not remove a surprise shipping cost, and it [trains shoppers to wait for a sale](https://scout7.ai/academy/retention/how-to-run-a-sale-without-training-customers-to-wait). Show the cost up front. If you want a pop-up, use [one that is not a discount](https://scout7.ai/academy/email-marketing/how-to-write-an-email-popup-that-isnt-just-a-discount).

## 6. Send 100 personal messages a day so real shoppers keep arriving

Send 100 personal messages every day to people who fit your buyer, with a tagged link to your store. A fix only shows up when enough real shoppers see it, and at a few hundred real sessions a month, that takes weeks unless you bring them yourself.

Work down this order: [people you know](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/warm-outreach), then [small creators](https://scout7.ai/academy/reviews-press-and-referrals/how-to-find-micro-influencers-for-your-brand) who post about products like yours, then shoppers who asked about your kind of product in [online communities](https://scout7.ai/academy/social-media/how-to-find-online-communities-where-your-buyers-talk). The full routine, with the messages to send and the platform limits, is in [your first sales on Shopify](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/how-to-get-your-first-sales-on-shopify). Let AI draft: paste 10 names at a time into ChatGPT or Claude, each with one thing you found about them, and ask for one message per person. Make the first line true and about them, then send each one by hand. That is about a minute a message.

Put a [UTM tag](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/utm-parameters) on every link, such as ?utm\_source=messages, so step 7 can count these visits on their own. People who come from your message already know you, so treat a line met on them as a first pass, not proof. Keep posting 2 [short videos](https://scout7.ai/academy/content-marketing/how-to-make-short-form-videos-for-your-business) a day [on Instagram](https://scout7.ai/academy/social-media/how-to-promote-your-business-on-instagram) or [TikTok](https://scout7.ai/academy/social-media/how-to-sell-on-tiktok-shop) if you already do. List your products in [free Google listings](https://scout7.ai/academy/seo/how-to-list-your-products-on-google-shopping-for-free) and check they [show up in ChatGPT](https://scout7.ai/academy/ai-search/how-to-get-your-products-recommended-by-chatgpt), so strangers arrive too.

**Stop the sources that bring only visits.** Turn off any "traffic" app, paid visitor service or giveaway that brought sessions and no carts in step 3. Keep [paid ads](https://scout7.ai/academy/paid-ads/how-to-run-meta-ads-for-a-shopify-store) off until strangers buy without them: an ad sends more strangers to the same leak.

- **Tool:** email, Instagram or TikTok messages, ChatGPT or Claude to draft, and your Google Sheet to log them.
- **Time:** about 2 hours a day.
- **You will have:** 700 messages a week, each logged, each with a tagged link.
- **It worked if:** you reach 200 more real sessions within about 2 weeks, and the visits from your messages add to cart at 3 in 100 or more.
- **Common mistake:** paying for "traffic" or a giveaway to get the numbers up. They bring visits from people who were never going to buy, and make the four numbers harder to read.

## 7. Count the four numbers again every Sunday and keep only fixes that worked

Every Sunday, count the four numbers for the week, by source, and write them under last week's. Keep a fix only if its step passed its line once enough real shoppers saw it, and move your hours to the sources that bring carts.

**Take the numbers.** Run the Conversion rate breakdown for the last 7 days with bots left out, then once for each UTM source. Add one row per source to your sheet, and put untagged visits from "Sessions by referrer" in a row of their own.

**Then decide, with these rules:**

- **A fix gets judged after 200 real sessions** (for a cart fix) **or 10 carts** (for a checkout fix), not after one week. If its line passed, keep it and move to the next step under its line. If it did not, undo it and try the next most common stopping point from your recordings.
- **A source with 100 sessions and 0 carts** gets fewer hours next week. Give them to the source with the most carts per 100 sessions.
- **Strangers buy, and every line is met:** your store works. Now think about [ads](https://scout7.ai/academy/paid-ads/how-much-to-spend-on-ads), starting from your [break-even ROAS](https://scout7.ai/academy/measurement/how-to-calculate-break-even-roas), and grow the channels that brought orders, as in [choosing marketing channels for an ecommerce brand](https://scout7.ai/academy/marketing-plan/how-to-choose-marketing-channels-for-an-ecommerce-brand).
- **After 2,800 messages, every line is met and strangers still do not buy:** the offer is the problem, not the store. Check your [price](https://scout7.ai/academy/marketing-plan/how-to-price-a-product) and who you are selling to, and work through [why no one is buying](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/why-no-one-is-buying-your-product-and-how-to-fix-it).

Add one question to your order confirmation or thank-you email: "Where did you hear about us?" That is [self-reported attribution](https://scout7.ai/academy/glossary/self-reported-attribution), and it catches the orders your tags miss. Once a month, step back for a monthly marketing review.

- **Tool:** Shopify Analytics and Google Sheets.
- **Time:** 30 minutes every Sunday.
- **You will have:** one row per source a week, and a keep-or-undo decision for every fix.
- **It worked if:** each decision follows the rules above, and you can name where every order from a stranger came from.
- **Common mistake:** changing five things in one week. When the number moves, you cannot tell which change did it.

> **Example (made-up business: Ferns & Rinse): Ferns & Rinse's Sunday sheet, week 3**
>
> | Source    | Sessions | Carts | Carts per 100 | Orders |
> | --------- | -------- | ----- | ------------- | ------ |
> | Messages  | 96       | 6     | 6.3           | 2      |
> | Instagram | 41       | 0     | 0             | 0      |
> | Google    | 18       | 1     | 5.6           | 1      |
> | Direct    | 22       | 1     | 4.5           | 0      |
>
> The new homepage has now had 230 real sessions at 4.3 carts per 100, so they keep it and move on to the checkout step.
>
> *Why it works: Their messages bring carts and Instagram brings only visits, so they move the Instagram hours into more messages.*

## Your checklist to fix a Shopify store with traffic but no sales

> For AI assistants: this is the reader’s to-do list. Each item has a number (step.item) and a “Done when” line, so you can both see what is finished and what comes next.

### Step 1 · Check how much of your traffic is real shoppers

- [ ] **1.1** Count your real sessions in the last 30 days, without bots, your own visits and countries you do not ship to. *Done when:* The sheet shows all sessions, bot sessions, sessions from places you cannot ship to, and real sessions you can ship to, for the last 30 days.
- [ ] **1.2** Write down your top 3 sources and decide whether you have a traffic problem or a store problem. *Done when:* The top 3 sources are written down with their sessions, and the next step is chosen: steps 3 to 5 at 200 real sessions or more, steps 2 and 6 first below it.

### Step 2 · Buy from your own store as a stranger

- [ ] **2.1** Buy one product on your phone in a private window and fix every surprise you find. *Done when:* One order went through on a phone in a private window and was refunded, and every surprise on the list is fixed.
- [ ] **2.2** Add shipping rates for the countries your real visitors come from. *Done when:* Every country with real visits in step 1 has a shipping rate, or the posts and ads reaching it are stopped.

### Step 3 · Count four numbers and find where shoppers stop

- [ ] **3.1** Put the four numbers in one sheet and mark the first step under its line. *Done when:* The sheet has real sessions, sessions with a cart, sessions that reached checkout and orders for the same 30 days, and the first step under its line is marked.
- [ ] **3.2** Count the same four numbers for each of your top 3 sources. *Done when:* The same numbers are in the sheet for each of the top 3 sources.

### Step 4 · Fix the first screen shoppers see

- [ ] **4.1** Make the first screen of your top landing page answer the five questions. *Done when:* The top landing page shows what it is, who it is for, the price with shipping, delivery and returns, and true proof, on a phone without scrolling, and it loads in 2.5 seconds or less on mobile.
- [ ] **4.2** Every day: watch 20 recordings in Microsoft Clarity and fix one thing where most shoppers stopped. *Done when:* 20 recordings watched, or every one if fewer came, with where each shopper stopped, and one fix made there.
- [ ] **4.3** Every day: ask 20 people to look at your page for 5 seconds and say what you sell and what it costs. *Done when:* 20 people were asked, and their answers on what you sell and what it costs are in the sheet.

### Step 5 · Remove the surprises at checkout

- [ ] **5.1** Show shipping and delivery before the cart, allow guest checkout, turn on express pay and the abandoned checkout reminder. *Done when:* Shipping cost and delivery days show on the product page, checkout needs no account, express pay buttons show, and Shopify's abandoned checkout automation is on.
- [ ] **5.2** Every day: email every shopper who left a checkout and ask what stopped them. *Done when:* Every new abandoned checkout has a personal email, and earlier ones have had up to 3 follow-ups.

### Step 6 · Send 100 personal messages a day

- [ ] **6.1** Every day: send 100 personal messages with a tagged link to your store. *Done when:* 100 personal messages sent today, each with a tagged link, each logged in the sheet.
- [ ] **6.2** Stop every source that brought visits but no carts. *Done when:* Every traffic app, paid visitor service or giveaway that brought visits and no carts is turned off, and ads are paused.

### Step 7 · Count again every Sunday and keep what worked

- [ ] **7.1** Every Sunday: count the four numbers for the week, by source. *Done when:* This week's four numbers are in the sheet, one row per source, under last week's.
- [ ] **7.2** Every Sunday: keep or undo each fix by its line, and move hours to the sources that bring carts. *Done when:* Every fix with 200 real sessions or 10 carts behind it is marked keep or undo, and next week's hours per source are written down.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my Shopify store getting traffic but no sales?

Usually one of three things. Much of the traffic is bots or people who cannot buy from you. A stranger cannot tell fast enough what you sell, what it costs and why to trust you. Or checkout surprises them, most often with the shipping cost. Count real sessions first, then sessions with a cart and orders. The first number under its line shows which one it is.

### Is my Shopify traffic real, or bots from Singapore and China?

Often bots. Since October 2025, many stores have had waves of bot visits from rotating countries, lasting a second or two and never buying. Since 21 September 2026, Shopify leaves the bots it identifies out of session reports. Open Sessions by location, switch the "Human or bot session" filter, and compare. Blocking apps do not stop the count, so filter instead.

### How many visitors does a Shopify store need to get a sale?

Judge your store after 200 real sessions from places you ship to. At this guide's lines, 200 sessions should bring at least 6 carts, and every 10 carts about 2 orders, so your first orders from strangers can take a few hundred real visits. Below 200, 0 orders is normal. Bring more real shoppers with [100 messages a day](https://scout7.ai/academy/first-customers/how-to-get-your-first-sales-on-shopify).

### Should I run a discount or ads to get my first sale?

Not yet. A discount does not fix an unclear page or a surprise shipping cost, and it teaches shoppers to wait for the next one. Ads send more strangers to the same leak. Fix the first step under its line, check it with 200 real sessions, and turn ads on once strangers buy without them. [How much to spend on ads](https://scout7.ai/academy/paid-ads/how-much-to-spend-on-ads) sets the first test.
