How to get your first sale on Etsy

Get your first sale on Etsy with no ad budget: fix every listing Etsy search flags, rewrite titles and 13 tags in buyers’ words, add 1 real listing a day up to 30, send 100 personal messages a day with your Share & Save link, post 2 pins and 2 short videos a day, and count orders by source every Sunday.

Your Etsy shop is open and your listings are up, but you have no sales, or one from a friend. Here is how to get your first sale on Etsy: fix what Etsy search checks, write your titles and tags in the words buyers type, then send 100 personal messages a day with your shop link, for 4 weeks. Most new sellers list a few items, wait for Etsy to send buyers, and decide after a quiet month that the product is wrong, when almost nobody has seen it.

Do these three things

About 5 to 6 hours a day, every day, for 4 weeks, plus about $6 in listing fees and free products for the creators who say yes. Judge it after 2,800 messages, not after the first quiet week.

Show the three actions in full
  1. Today: open Shop Manager and fix every listing Etsy's search visibility filter flags. Then rewrite each title and its 13 tags in the words buyers typesoon into Etsy, so your listings can show up at all.
  2. Every day: send 100 personal messages with your Share & Save link, first to people you know, then to small creatorssoon who post about things like yours. Add 1 new listing a day until your shop has 30. AI drafts; you add the true line about each person.
  3. Every Sunday: count visits and orders in Etsy Stats by where they came from. Give next week's hours to the places that brought orders.

ChatGPT or Claude reads this guide and works through it with you.

1. Fix every listing Etsy search flags in Shop Manager

Before you send anyone to your shop, open Shop Manager and fix every listing that Etsy's own search visibility filter flags. Etsy search ranks listings lower when the first photo is dark or a collage, when there are too few photos, when there is no return policy, or when US shipping costs more than $6. Each of those hides you from the strangers who could make your first sale.

Do these in Shop Manager, in this order:

  1. 1

    Filter for search visibility issues

Go to Listings. In the "Search factors" bar, filter by search visibility issues. Etsy lists each problem next to the listing it hurts, with a button to fix it. Work through every one. Etsy says changes can take up to a day to show in search.

  2. 2

Add a return policy and fix US shipping

Add a return policy to every listing, even if it says "no returns accepted": a listing with no policy ranks lower. Since October 2024, Etsy search puts US listings with domestic shipping under $6 first, because buyers stop buying when shipping reaches $6. If your shipping costs more, move part of it into the item price, so the total stays the same. If you turn on Etsy's free shipping guarantee, orders of $35 or more ship free in the US.

  3. 3

Use at least 5 photos and a short video

You have 20 photo slots. Use at least 5: the item alone on a plain, bright background first, then the item in someone's hands, its size next to something people know, the details, and the packaging. No collage as the first photo. Add a short video of the item being used.

  4. 4

Finish the shop and say who makes it

Add a shop logo, a real photo of you on your About page, and your shop policies. An unfinished shop can lower your listings in search. If a production partner makes or prints any part of your item, Etsy's rules say you must name that on the listing.

  5. 5

Check your price after Etsy's fees

In the US, each sale costs a 6.5% transaction fee on the item and shipping, payment processing of 3% plus $0.25, and the $0.20 listing fee. Check your price still leaves you money after all of it.

Leave Offsite Ads on while you have no sales, and spend nothing on other adssoon yet. Etsy runs these ads for you on Google and other sites, and you pay a 15% fee only when one of them brings an order, never more than $100. When checkout inside ChatGPT started in October 2025, Etsy said only listings in Offsite Ads were included. Etsy now lets US shoppers buy some listings in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Copilot, and those shoppers read what your listing sayssoon first.

If you sell digital downloads, skip the shipping fix. Every other check still applies.

  • Tool: Etsy Shop Manager. No paid tool needed.
  • Time: about 2 hours.
  • You will have: no listing flagged in the search visibility filter, a return policy on every listing, US shipping under $6 or free, and at least 5 photos on each listing.
  • It worked if: the filter shows 0 issues the next day, and 4 of 5 people who do not know you can say what the item is and its price with delivery after 10 seconds on the listing. That second check is how you make a new store look trustworthysoon.
  • Common mistake: $7 shipping on a $15 item, or an empty return policy. Both push a listing down before anyone sees it.

Rewrite every listing title so it names the item first, in the words buyers type into Etsy, and fill all 13 tags with other phrases buyers use. Etsy can only show your listing for a search if the words match, so this step decides whether strangers ever see you.

Find the words. Type what your item is into Etsy's own search bar and write down the phrases it suggests. These are real searches, and they are free. If you have Marketplace Insights (Shop Manager › Stats › Marketplace Insights), check up to 15 phrases a week: it shows the search volume, how many people searched each keyword in the last 30 days and how many listings compete for it. A phrase with real searches and fewer listings is your best chance. Give ChatGPT or Claudesoon your item and the phrases you found, and ask it to group them. Check each one against Etsy's search bar yourself. The same way of finding the words buyers usesoon works on Google too.

Write the title. Since August 2025, Etsy's guidance is to name the item clearly, put the most important traits first (colour, material, size), use fewer than 15 words, and not repeat words. Move words like "perfect" or "beautiful" into the descriptionsoon. Leave price, shipping and sales out of the title. Etsy's title tool in the search visibility area can suggest a rewrite; check it says what a buyer would type.

An Etsy title
[What it is] for [who or what problem], [key trait], [key trait]

Fill 13 tags and every attribute. Each tag can be up to 20 characters. Use 13 different phrases buyers type, such as other names for the item, the problem it fixes, and the style. Do not repeat the title word for word. Then fill every attribute Etsy offers for your category, such as colour, occasion and holiday. Gift words like "gift for her" belong in tags and attributes, not in the title. Before the holidays, check your gift tags and attributes, and pitch holiday gift guidessoon that feature small shops. Stuffing a title or tags with words that do not describe the item is keyword stuffing, and Etsy says it can hurt your ranking.

  • Tool: Etsy's search bar, Marketplace Insights (15 free searches a week), and ChatGPT or Claude to group the phrases.
  • Time: about 3 hours for your first listings, then 10 minutes for each new one.
  • You will have: every listing with a short title that names the item, 13 different tags, and every attribute filled in.
  • It worked if: within 14 days, Etsy Stats shows views from Etsy search on each listing. A listing with under 20 views in 14 days needs a new title, new tags or a new first photo.
  • Common mistake: a 140-character title that repeats the same phrase five ways. It was common advice until 2025. Etsy now asks for the opposite.

See it done: Ferns & Rinse's Etsy title

Ferns & Rinse is a made-up plant-based haircare brand with its own Shopify store. It sells one shampoo and one conditioner at $28 each, or both for $49.

Before

Ferns Shampoo Natural Organic Vegan Shampoo Natural Hair Gift for Her Best Shampoo

After

Plant-Based Shampoo for Dry Curly Hair

Why it works: The new title says what it is and who it is for, in the words a buyer types, with no repeats.

3. Add 1 new listing a day until your shop has 30

Add one new listing every day until your shop has 30 listings. Etsy says the more items you have, the more ways shoppers have to find you, and each new listing can match a search your others miss.

Each listing must be a real, different choice a buyer could make: a new item, a new colour, a size, or a set of items you already sell. Give each one its own search phrase from step 2. Etsy gives a new listing a small boost in search for a few hours to a few days, but Etsy says that making new listings or renewing old ones just for that boost does not work. Its rules also forbid anything meant to game search. So never copy an old listing under a new title.

If you make fewer than 30 different things, stop when you run out, and put that time into your messages in step 4. Each listing costs $0.20 and lasts 4 months or until it sells, so 30 listings cost about $6.

  • Tool: Etsy Shop Manager.
  • Time: about 45 minutes a day: photos, title, tags and attributes.
  • You will have: 30 listings, or every real item you make, each with its own search phrase.
  • It worked if: the number of listings with views from Etsy search goes up each week in Stats.
  • Common mistake: listing the same item five times with different titles. Etsy says it does not help, and its rules forbid anything meant to game search.

Send 100 personal messages a day, one at a time, each with your Share & Save link: first to everyone you know, then to small creatorssoon who post about things like yours. Etsy search ranks listings partly on clicks, favourites and sales, so a shop with none starts low. These messages bring your first buyers while search learns about your listings.

Join Share & Save first. It is free. Share links to your shop or listings from Shop Manager or the Etsy seller app. When someone orders within 30 days of clicking your link, Etsy gives you back 4% of the order total. Those credits also tell you which orders came from your own messages.

Never use Etsy Messages for this. Etsy's rules say messages may not be used for unsolicited advertising. Send from your phone, your messaging apps, your social accounts and your email instead.

People you know first. List everyone: phone contacts, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook friends, LinkedIn, old email threads. Most people can list 200 to 400 names. Say plainly who the item is for, and ask them to order if it suits them, or to name one person it suits. Give ChatGPT or Claude your list in groups with the template below and ask for one draft per person; add one true line about each person and send it yourself. That is about a minute a message. Every name they pass you is a small referralsoon: message that person the same day. Skip a big opening discount, which teaches people to wait for the next salesoon. Do not ask people you know for an Etsy review. Etsy's rules forbid friends and family leaving biased reviews, and a review from a stranger helps the next buyer more. Etsy asks every buyer for a review itself, and getting your first product reviewssoon covers the rest.

The message to people you know
Hi [name], [one true line about them or the last time you spoke].I've just opened an Etsy shop, [shop name], selling [what it is] for [who it is for]. [One line on why you made it.]Would it suit you? If yes, here it is: [Share & Save link]. If not, do you know one person it would suit? I'd love an introduction. No pressure at all either way.

Then 100 new creators a day. Once everyone you know has had a message, send all 100 to creators. Search Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest for your buyers' words and keep a micro-influencer only if they have 1,000 to 20,000 followers and posted about something like your item in the last 30 days. Offer a free item with no need to post, and make each creator their own promo code in Shop Manager › Marketing › Sales and discounts, so you can see the orders they bring. The FTC expects a creator who got a free item to say so in the post. Never ask a creator you sent a gift to for an Etsy review: Etsy's rules forbid free items in return for reviews. Ship only to creators who say yes, up to a weekly number you can afford, such as 10 a week. Ask whether you may reuse their photo or video in your listing, and get the yes in writing: it becomes your first customer contentsoon.

Spread the volume. Instagram does not publish a limit on messages to people who do not follow you, and new accounts get warnings early. Send about 20 a day by Instagram, stop there if you see a warning, and send the rest by emailsoon to the business address in each creator's bio. Gmail requires every sender to set up SPF or DKIM and to keep spam reports under 0.3%. If you email more than about 50 strangers a day, warm up a second domainsoon first. In the US, every email needs your postal address and a way to say no, and you must honour a no within 10 business days. Follow upsoon twice, 3 days apart, with one new line each time; follow-ups count toward your 100.

The creator message
Subject: [your item] for your [their topic] postsHi [first name],[One true line about a post or video they made.]I make [what it is] for [who it is for] and sell it on Etsy. Could I send you one to try? It's free, and there's no need to post.If you do post, please say it was a gift ("Thanks to [shop name] for the free product"). Here's a code for your followers: [CODE] for [X]% off at [Share & Save link].[Your name], [shop name]
[Postal address]
Not for you? Reply "no" and I won't write again.
  • Tool: your phone and messaging apps, Gmail, a Google Sheet to log every message, Etsy promo codes, and ChatGPT or Claude to draft.
  • Time: about 2 hours 30 minutes a day, including 45 minutes to find 100 new creators once your own contacts are done.
  • Cost: your weekly number of free items, plus postage.
  • You will have: 2,800 messages sent and logged after 4 weeks, every person you know asked once, and every creator who said yes holding your item and their own code.
  • It worked if: you get at least 2 orders or introductions for every 100 messages to people you know, and at least 5 yeses for every 100 creators. Below 3 yeses in 100, rewrite the first linesoon so it is more clearly about their post.
  • Common mistake: one "my Etsy shop is open!" post instead of personal messages. Most of your contacts never see it. The other is asking friends to buy and review.

See it done: Ferns & Rinse's message to an old friend

To: Sam, an old friend from university with curly hair

Hi Sam, I still use the cold-rinse trick you showed me in our second year.

I've just opened an Etsy shop, Ferns & Rinse, with my sister: a plant-based shampoo and conditioner for dry, curly hair. We made them because we couldn't read the labels on salon brands.

Would it suit you? If yes, here it is: [Share & Save link]. If not, do you know one person it would suit? I'd love an introduction.

No pressure at all either way.

Maya

Why it works: It is about her, asks for an order or a name, and does not ask for a review.

5. Post 2 pins a day on Pinterest and 2 short videos a day on Instagram and TikTok

Post 2 new pins a day on Pinterest and 2 short portrait videossoon a day on Instagram and on TikTok, each showing one listing and linking to it with your Share & Save link. Pinterest users save ideas to buy later, and it is where many Etsy buyers start.

Pinterest. Set up a free Pinterest business account. Pinterest does not let you "claim" an Etsy shop, as it does a website you own, so link each pin straight to the listing. Each pin needs a new vertical photo or short video, a title in the words buyers search (from step 2), and a link to a different listing. Pinterest publishes no daily pin limit, but its rules forbid repetitive content made to earn money and automation it has not approved. So never post the same picture to the same link again and again. With 30 listings and 2 pins a day, each listing gets a new pin about every 2 weeks.

Instagram and TikTok. Film in two batches a week, 14 videos each time, and put them in a simple content calendarsoon. Each video is 15 to 30 seconds, portrait (9:16). The first 2 seconds show the problem or the result, then hands using the item. Give ChatGPT or Claude the questions people asked in your messages and ask for 14 short scripts; that is AI doing the draftingsoon, and you film the real item. On Instagram, post each one as a Reel and turn on the "Trial" toggle before you share, so it goes to people who do not follow you first. Use up to 5 hashtags; Instagram allows no more. Put your Share & Save shop link in your bio; the rest of the account setup is in promoting your business on Instagramsoon. One video can serve every appsoon, and more ideas are in Instagram post ideas for D2C brandssoon.

  • Tool: your phone, a free Pinterest business account, Instagram and TikTok, and ChatGPT or Claude for scripts and pin titles.
  • Time: about 1 hour 30 minutes a day on average: two filming sessions of about 3 hours a week, plus 30 minutes a day to make pins, post and reply to comments.
  • You will have: 56 pins and 56 videos on each app after 4 weeks, each linked to a listing.
  • It worked if: by week 3, Etsy Stats shows visits from social media, and at least one pin or video brought a click to a listing. If none of the first 56 videos passed 500 views, change the first 2 seconds before anything else.
  • Common mistake: pinning the same photo of the same listing every day. Pinterest treats it as repetitive, and it reaches the same people twice.

6. Answer 20 shopper questions a day in 5 communities

Pick 5 online places where shoppers ask for ideas or help about your kind of item, and answer 20 questions a day across them. Answer the question fully first. Mention your shop only if someone asks, or if the place allows it, and always say it is yours.

Go where buyers ask, not where sellers talk. Etsy's own Community forums are full of other sellers, and Etsy's rules forbid posting links to your shop there. Buyers ask in gift and hobby subreddits, Facebook groupssoon and forums about the problem your item fixes. Find themsoon by searching your buyers' problem or "gift for [who]" plus "reddit" or "group", and keep places with questions from the last 30 days. Read each place's rules on self-promotion before you post. 20 answers over 5 places is about 4 in each, which stays inside most rules.

Let AI find the questions and list the points to cover. Write each answer yourself. Communities remove replies that read as pasted from AI, and accounts that only promote get bannedsoon.

A reply
[Answer their exact question in the first line.][2–3 tips that help, which work without buying anything.][Only if it truly helps, and the rules allow it:] Disclosure: I make [what it is] and sell it on Etsy. Happy to share the link if useful.
  • Tool: the search box on each site.
  • Time: about 1 hour a day, 3 minutes an answer.
  • You will have: 560 useful answers after 4 weeks, under your own name.
  • It worked if: by week 4, a buyer who ordered says they found you in one of those places, or your Share & Save credits show an order you cannot trace to a message, pin or video.
  • Common mistake: posting "check out my Etsy shop". Moderators remove it, and the account loses the trust it needs for the next answer.

7. Count visits and orders in Etsy Stats every Sunday and move your hours

Every Sunday, open Etsy Stats and write down this week's visits, orders and where they came from. After 2,800 messages, stop what brought no orders and give its hours to what brought the most.

Get the numbers from four places. In Shop Manager › Stats, write down visits, orders and conversion rate, and the "How shoppers found you" section: Etsy search, social media, direct and other, and ads. Your Share & Save credits show orders from your own links. Each creator's promo code shows the orders they brought. For every other order from someone you do not know, send a thank-you and ask "How did you first hear about us?"

The Sunday sheet
Week | Messages | Creators who said yes | New listings | Pins | Videos | Answers | Visits | Orders: people you know | Orders: strangers
Where strangers came from: Etsy search | creator codes | Share & Save links | Pinterest | Instagram or TikTok | communities | other

After 2,800 messages (4 weeks at 100 a day), decide:

  • A listing with under 20 views in the last 14 days: Etsy search is not showing it. Rewrite its title and tags and change its first photo (step 2).
  • More than 500 visits and 0 orders: the listings are the problem, not the traffic. Check price with shipping, photos and your description against the top 5 listings for the same search, as in a quick competitor analysis. Ask 5 people who looked what stopped them, and read why no one is buying.
  • A place that brought 0 orders and almost no visits: stop it, and move its hours to the place that brought the most orders from strangers.
  • Creators brought orders: raise your weekly number of free items if your budget allows.

Leave Etsy Ads off until at least 1 in every 100 visits from strangers becomes an order. Before that, ads pay to send strangers to listings that do not sell, and you get clicks but no salessoon. Then test $3 a day for 14 days on your 5 listings with the most favourites. Etsy's minimum is $1 a day, and new shops can spend up to $25. Stop the test if it brings 0 orders, and work out your break-even ROASsoon, the ROAS at which an ad order still leaves you money, before you spend more.

  • Tool: Etsy Stats, your Etsy Payment account for Share & Save credits, and Google Sheets.
  • Time: 20 minutes each Sunday.
  • You will have: one row a week, and a source for every order.
  • It worked if: you can say where every order from a stranger came from.
  • Common mistake: judging after one slow week, counting favourites instead of orders, or turning on Etsy Ads to fix listings that get no views.

See it done: Ferns & Rinse's Etsy shop after 4 weeks

The decision: with only 7 real listings (two products, sizes and sets), they stopped adding listings in week 1 and put the time into messages. Creator codes brought 3 of the 7 orders from strangers, so they raise the weekly number of free items from 10 to 15. Etsy search brought 2, so they rewrite the tags on the 3 listings with under 20 views. Visits from strangers are still under 100 for each order, so Etsy Ads stay off.

Why it works: They decide by counting orders from strangers and where each came from, not views or favourites.

When one place clearly brings orders, choose the next channel to add, and move into the longer routine for marketing a D2C brand. If you also sell on your own store, the same routine is in getting your first sales on Shopify. Once a month, step back for a marketing reviewsoon, and once buyers arrive, work on getting them to order againsoon. If 5 to 6 hours a day feels impossible, find the hours in your week before you cut the numbers.

Where Scout7 helps

Scout7 speeds up steps 5 and 6. Steps 1 to 4 and 7 are yours.

Step 5. Scout7 makes portrait (9:16) videos from a script, with captions, and image posts with captions in your brand's voice. You choose the cast and voice, direct each scene, reshoot what misses and approve the cut. It schedules approved posts to Instagram, Facebook and Threads. You download the videos and images to post on TikTok and Pinterest yourself.

Step 6. Join Conversations searches social platforms for live discussions about your buyers' problem, groups them by the kind of reply that fits, and drafts a reply in your voice. You read each thread and approve or rewrite the reply. Nothing is posted without your approval.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get your first sale on Etsy?

Sellers on Etsy's forums report anything from 2 days to 4 months. The first order often comes from someone you know, in the first days of messaging them. Orders from strangers usually start in weeks 2 to 4, once creators have tried your item and your titles have had time in search. Judge the whole routine after 2,800 messages, not by the calendar.

Why do I have views on Etsy but no sales?

Views mean search is showing you; the listing is not convincing buyers. Compare your price with shipping, first photo and description with the top 5 listings for the same search. Fix shipping over $6 first. If more than 500 visits brought 0 orders, ask 5 people what stopped themsoon before you send more traffic.

Should I pay for Etsy Ads to get my first sale?

Not yet. Etsy Ads can start at $1 a day, but ads cannot fix a listing that does not sell. Wait until at least 1 in 100 visits from strangers becomes an order, then test $3 a day for 14 days on your 5 most-favourited listings. Offsite Ads are different: you pay only when they bring an order, so leave them on.

Can my friends buy from my Etsy shop and leave reviews?

Friends can buy. Do not ask them for a review: Etsy's rules forbid friends and family leaving biased reviews, and forbid free items or discounts in return for reviews. Etsy asks every buyer for a review itself. Reviews from strangers come from the orders in steps 4 to 6, and getting your first product reviewssoon covers the rest.

Should I renew my Etsy listings to show up higher?

No. Etsy gives new and renewed listings a small boost for a few hours to a few days, and says renewing just for that boost does not work. Spend the time on titles, tags, first photos and your 100 messages instead. Add a new listing only when it is a real, different item, colour, size or set.
